Greens Councillor Chris Parker successfully moved at tonight’s Council meeting that Cessnock Council move to a policy of sourcing free range eggs in any future Council catering contracts.
Councillor Parker showed a video of some of the appalling conditions that caged chickens suffer from to support his motion.
Councillor Parker said. “The European Union is moving to phase out caged chickens by 2012 and there are countries such as Austria and Germany that have already phased out this cruel form of egg production.”
“Local Councils have the opportunity to help our communities move towards ridding ourselves of this unnecessary use of factory egg farming. Now that we have adopted it Cessnock council will promote the policy on its web site. We will also encourage Cessnock businesses, organisations and households to look for free range alternatives when buying eggs.” Chris Parker said.
Cessnock Council will now source certified free-range eggs in new catering contracts and will encourage suppliers to review their source of supply where possible. Cessnock Council will join Hornsby Council, which has recently adopted a similar policy.

WELL DONE CHRIS PARKER,WHAT A GUTSY COUNCILLOR YOU ARE TO TAKE THIS ON AND WIN, IT IS TIME MORE COUNCILLORS STOOD UP TO BE COUNTED ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WE SHARE THIS PLANET WITH AND THAT MEANS ALSO THE CRUELLY TREATED FARM ANIMALS IN FACTORY FARMS.
ReplyDeleteGood on you Cessnock council. When the majority of Australian house holds are aware of the cage egg issue there is no reason why our local government departments can not and should not adopt a free range egg only policy. Maitland, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle councils are dragging the chain!
